Nine team members, Assistant Coach Olen Jackson, and the wife of late Head Coach Paul Bremigan were in attendance at the MGHS Hall of Fame ceremonies held on January 15, 2010.
The football team finished the 1972 season with a record of eight wins and one loss, that loss occurring in a non-league game. The team captured the school’s first outright Mid Ohio Conference football championship since 1962 and faced strong competition in the conference, including big rivals North Union, Marion Catholic, and Big Walnut, who were undefeated until Mount Gilead played them.
While the team scored 276 points for the season, averaging 31 points per game, it held its opponents to just 70 points, an average of eight points per game. In its game against Cardington, the team set the second best single game point total (70 points) in Mount Gilead football history.
Five senior members of the team, John Chapman, Tom Zwayer, David Hobson, Tom Tennant, and Charlie Harmon, were named to the All Mid Ohio Conference First Team and one senior member, Tom Zwayer, was named Outstanding League Player. Four members of that team, Tom Zwayer, John Chapman, Monty Ward and Jim Rizor, are members of the Hall of Fame.
Other team members were Dennis Shaffer, Ron Harper, Claude Hetrick, Richard Smith, Doug Kemp, Kevin Irwin, Ron Mathews, Matt Long, Steve Matson, Art Korody, John Beltz, Dan Stacy, Randy Hord, Arlen Chapman, Brent Dodrill, Keith Robinson, Mark Foust, Steve Kemp, Alan West, Mike Hartman, Mike Fath, Rick Shoults, Steve Lyman, Mike Mosher, Mark Zwayer, and Bruce McChesney.
The team was coached by Paul Bremigan, a member of the Hall of Fame and recognized as having the most wins in Mount Gilead football history. Assistant coaches were Olen Jackson, Robert Castner, and Chris King.
